GlamArt! 2019 ColourPlay Edition

Interact with colours and discover Kampong Glam through a multi-sensory feast. Captivating installations with enthralling performances and workshops promise an immersive experience.

An epilogue showcase on the green space at the junction of Ophir Road and Beach Road, before it makes room for urban development. Kampong Glam’s resident artists Johor Idris and Jay Hammond dress up the site with colourful chandeliers and ‘lepak’ hammocks for an interactive experience, against the futuristic backdrop by international graffiti artist, Didier ‘Jaba’ Mathieu.

Soft colour shadows reflect on ‘loungey’ hammocks at day transforms into a fluorescent visual extravaganza in the night. The delightful play through colours, with random Kampong Glam related shapes represents art through diversity. Visitors can go on a hunt for standalone installations placed around the precinct to discover hidden gems, to learn more about the stories and characters in Kampong Glam.

Diversity through COLOUR

The spectrum of primary colours, accented with fluorescents, neons, and earth hues represent the multi-cultural community of Kampong Glam, embracing and changing through the times, finding the common ground that makes for a more vibrant society.

Visitors can experience colour play with neon paints while interacting with Kampong Glam’s street artists. Complimentary workshops like Art Jam! and MASKorate are conducted on weekends. Sessions are unstructured and candid. Groove & glow at the UV Party under the canopy of black lights with the company of live music, percussionists and aztec inspired dancers.

SHAPE towards the future

The basic shapes representing the backdrop of our society, interacts with other symbolic outlines, epitomizing the interaction of different social units within the community. New arts and concepts rooted within a heritage site, fuses many old and new ideas together, which organically grows the character of Kampong Glam into what it represents today.

Net of shared memories

With the imminent redevelopment works, the precious pocket of green space at the art installation site will be paved into a construction area. Walk under the lush trees, enjoy the tranquility, and listen to the surrounding ambient music before heavy machinery takes their place.

Write and weave your love messages to create a network of shared memories about Kampong Glam and Mother Nature. Stroll through the community net to learn and discover more stories about the precinct. Enjoy the final moments of the green space under the tall trees and colourful chandeliers at the intimate outdoor cinema on Sunday evenings.

Get to know the creators behind all the exciting and enthralling installations

IDRIS JOHOR

PrettyFreakyFantasy is a multi-disciplinary artist who dabbles in the fields of contemporary arts, mural, interior decoration and styling. PFF sees life through neon-tinted eclectic lenses and this is evident through his mural & interior decoration affairs for FuLuck Bar (KL), Blu Jaz Cafe, Piedra Negra, FUNQ, to name a few. Other than clubs, restaurants and street art, a highlight in his career would be the opportunity to helm the interior for @malashreehomeretreat in Bali. PFF aesthetic is drawn from an observation of potential and imagined worlds. With his keen eye for details and vibrant outlook on life, he contributed to the energetic transformation of the streets of Haji Lane into an IG-crazed backdrop for tourists and locals alike. His colourful, bright & bold colours are layered with a juxtaposition of pop culture, socially-conscious art with inspiring messages, inviting the viewer to not only enjoy the art but to pause, reflect and SMILE.

JAY HAMMOND

Jay Hammond is a man of many hats. A global citizen at heart, his multi-disciplinary and diverse artwork has brought him to many corners of the world. His daily interaction with varied cultures and personalities opened his eyes to the diverse perspectives of the world. A passionate activist and humanitarian, he believes creativity enlightens and empowers. With an imaginative mind, Jay had been commissioned for several heavyweight assignments in stage and set décor with Singapore’s ZoukOut & MediaCorp, and he had also dabbled with architectural conceptualisation that led to award-winning villas in Bali. With numerous arts-related fund raising activities for youths and indigenous villages under his arm, Jay is a philanthropist that uses art as his medium to touch lives. Originally hailing from Melbourne, Australia, he currently calls Bali as his home, and Singapore as his refuge.

DIDIER ‘JABA’ MATHIEU

The art of Didier Jaba Mathieu grows from his extensive travels and background as a graffiti writer, which is evident in the complex alchemy of his illustrations and digital paintings. Born in Armenia, Colombia, Jaba moved to Liege, Belgium at the age of 14 to further his studies at St. Luc Institution of Arts specialising in Illustration. He exhibited widely in art galleries around Europe and South America before relocation to Singapore to join Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), a division of Lucasfilm Ltd where he worked as a concept artist and digi-matte painter on feature films such as Transformers, Iron Man and Star Trek. Jaba continues to practice on multidisciplinary levels and participates in countless graffiti performances all over Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia. As an extension to his enthusi- asm and energy for illustration, Jaba also lectured at Nanyang Polytechnic, Singapore, focusing on Matte Painting, Environment, and Character Design. He published ENEMIES, a graphic novel released in 2015 with Ankama Editions France. In 2018 he completed the Masters of Fine Arts at Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore.
